Press Release, Oct. 2, 2011
On October 15 and 16, Music Director Gregory Burton will begin the York Symphony Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary season with a Brahms festival.
Joining the orchestra will be two favourite young soloists of recent years, violinist Luri Lee and cellist Andrew Ascenzo, joining forces to play Brahms’ lyrical and romantic Double Concerto.
Violinist Luri Lee is currently concertmaster of the Glenn Gould School Orchestra of the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her Trio Luna won the Felix Galimir Chamber Music Award at the University of Toronto, and was invited to the Banff Centre’s summer chamber music residency in the summer of 2008. She was also the winner of the 2008 Concerto Competition at University of Toronto, where she played the Brahms Violin Concerto. More recently, having graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, earning her Master of Music degree, Luri was selected from Peabody Conservatory students to perform a chamber music concert in Carnegie Hall and Singapore.
A York Region native, cellist Andrew Ascenzo recently completed his Undergraduate and Master's Degrees in Cello Performance at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Professor Shauna Rolston, while also studying jazz improvisation with Matt Brubeck. In addition to his duties as principal cellist of the U. of T. Orchestra, Andrew has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, including the York Symphony, The Sneak Peak Orchestra, and the York Chamber Ensemble. When he’s not playing classical music, Andrew is also a member of the popular Toronto based rock band You, Me, Baxter & Phil, which was formed in the fall of 2009.
In addition to the Double Concerto, the concert will include Brahms’ stirring and playful Academic Festival Overture, and his last major symphonic work, the Fourth Symphony.
The concerts are Saturday, October 15th at 8 pm at the Trinity Anglican Church in Aurora, and Sunday October 16th at 7:30 at the RichmondHill Centre for the Performing Arts.
